  Chapter 1

  “Twins? I’m pregnant with twins?”

  Suz McKenzie looked from the ultrasound screen to the doctor to Penn and Liam McKenzie, the two men she had handfasted herself to since the three of them could not be married in any legal sense of the word. The Scottish twins stood across the room, smiling like they had just invented sex. They did not look shocked. They did not look horrified. They did not even look surprised. How could they be taking such life-changing news so calmly?

  They looked like bookends standing there, but then, they were, after all, identical twins. Sharp cheekbones and solid jawlines held a ruggedness that explained why the technician had become flustered when she entered the room. Wavy hair, blacker than coal, normally fell in heavy waves to their shoulders, but today both men had it tied back at the base of their skulls. Even now at thirty-six, these two were identical in every way, except for their clothing. Penn wore khakis and a white button-down shirt with a deep red tie while Liam had on jeans and a chambray shirt with the Dreamer’s Dell, Inc. logo embroidered on the pocket.

  They looked so good and confident and happy, and she felt fat and frumpy and scared. For the first time in her pregnancy, Suz felt like she was going to throw up. Since her men remained silent at the shocking news, she turned back to the screen.

  “Yes, Mrs. McKenzie, I definitely see two babies. One here”—the woman who had introduced herself as Wendi looked at the screen and pointed out two blurry blobs that looked like big-headed aliens—“and the second one here. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since it appears that twins run in your husband’s family.”

  Suz did not bother to correct the woman’s assumption that she was married to only one of the men. That was a secret only a few very close friends and family knew.

  “Are they healthy?” Liam, the veterinarian of Dreamer’s Dell, Inc., asked.

  “They look right on course for a twelve-week pregnancy, but you did not hear that from me. The radiologist will read this and be in touch with your OB, probably tomorrow,” Wendi said as she punched a series of buttons then turned to a printer on a separate stand.

  “Are they boys or girls?” Penn asked as the two men crossed the room to stand beside the bed, their eyes glued to the monitor.

  “It’s too early to tell.” After the printer spit out two small papers, she turned back. “Here are pictures for their baby albums,” she said, handing them to Suz with a broad smile before saving the rest of the information and shutting down the machine.

  Suz accepted the pictures then a wad of paper towels to clean the cold gel from her belly. She waited until the technician left the room before looking to her men again.

  “You got me pregnant with twins,” she whispered, afraid to speak any louder. She heard the shock in her tone, even if they could not, though she knew they did. At times, these two knew her better than she knew herself.

  “Oh, lass, ’twill be a’ right,” Liam said, taking the paper towels from her and gently wiping her belly, which was already starting to fill out. “We’re going to take such good care of yo
u and the bairns.”

  “Aye, we will, brother. Now how about we go and get some ice cream on the way home,” Penn agreed as he circled the exam table and wrapped his arms around Suz’s shoulders.

  Liam finished then pulled her yoga pants and his borrowed T-shirt back into place. “What do ye say to a nice hot fudge sundae, lass? And then we’ll go buy ye some clothes that have a bit more room fer the bairns ta them.”

  Though nerves had kept her from eating lunch, she still was not sure she could eat. At least that was what her mind said. Her stomach had other ideas and grumbled loud enough she was surprised someone walking by the exam room did not peek in to see what all the noise was about.

  “Well, I guess that answers that,” Liam said with a chuckle.

  He threw the paper towels away and washed his hands while Penn easily lifted her from the table and set her on her feet.

  “What are we going to do with twins?” Suz asked with a sigh as she leaned into Penn. He took her weight easily, wrapped his arms around her back, and held her tight to his chest.

  Liam returned and moved to press against her back, forming what she liked to think of as a Suz sandwich.

  “We’re goin’ ta love them and raise them as good people who mind their mum and daddies and be proud of their heritage,” Penn assured her, bending his head down and nuzzling his cheek against hers.

  “And one day, if ye hae a lass, ye’ll take her ta the studio and teach her the ways of her Dream Weaver heritage,” Liam added, parting her hair and brushing it out of his way so he could lick the skin at her nape.

  Penn cut her off. “Luv, we dunna hae ta worry about anythin’ right now except what kind of ice cream ye want ta eat.”

  It took a moment for her to realize he was right. There were a lot of things to think about and worry over, but there was time. The babies would not be here for six more months.   What kind of ice cream she wanted.
